Abstract This work was carried out in order to evaluate the initial growth in different conditions of shadings of the species Copernicia alba, Copernicia hospita and Copernicia macroglossa. Initially the seed were soaked in water to a pre-germination, afterward were sowed in tubes (288 ml) filled with substrate (sandy loam + organic compost + vermiculite) in proportion 2:1:1 and kept in full sun, 30%, 50% e 70% shading. It was adopted the completely randomized design, with five repetitions (4 plants/repetition) and five periods of evaluation: 45, 90, 135, 180 and 225 days after sowing, with the factors disposed in a spli-splot measured over time (4 shading levels x 5 evaluation times). Each period of evaluation were measured the following variables: number of leaves, height, stem diameter, foliar area, dry mass of aerial parts and roots, Dickson of quality index. The seedling of Copernicia cultivated in full sun and 30% shading express positive effects in the initial growth with good quality. The largest leaf areas of the species were found in the environment with 30% shading. In face of these results, the obtained data are important and indispensable to establishment of seedling production of quality of Copernicia.

Resumo Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar o crescimento inicial em diferentes condições de sombreamento das espécies Copernicia alba, Copernicia hospita e Copernicia macroglossa. Inicialmente, as sementes foram embebidas em água para uma pré-germinação, em seguida foram semeadas em tubetes (288 ml) preenchidos com substrato (arisco + composto orgânico + vermiculita) na proporção de 2:1:1 e mantidas a pleno sol, 30%, 50% e 70% de sombreamento. Adotou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 5 repetições (4 plantas/repetição) e cinco períodos de avaliação 45, 90, 135, 180 e 225 dias após a semeadura, com fatores dispostos em arranjo de parcelas subdivididas no tempo (4 níveis de sombreamento x 5 épocas de avaliação). A cada época de avaliação, foram mensuradas as seguintes variáveis respostas: número de folhas, altura, diâmetro do coleto, área foliar, massa seca das partes aéreas e das raízes e índice de qualidade de Dickson. As mudas de Copernicia cultivadas em pleno sol e 30% de sombreamento expressam efeitos positivos no crescimento inicial com boa qualidade. Os melhores resultados de área foliar das espécies foram encontrados no ambiente com 30% de sombreamento. Diante desses resultados, os dados obtidos são importantes e indispensáveis ao estabelecimento de produção de mudas de qualidade de Copernicia.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of light availability and salt stress on the growth and quality of hazel sterculia seedlings. The experiment was conducted with two light conditions – full sun (L1), and 50% shading (L2) – and five salinity levels in the irrigation water – 1.0 (S1), 2.2 (S2), 3.2 (S3), 4.2 (S4), and 5.1 (S5) dS m-1. The environment with 50% shading was the most suitable to produce hazel sterculia seedlings, even under high salinity (5.1 dS m-1). Increasing salinity negatively affects the growth and quality of hazel sterculia seedlings. Therefore, controlling sunlight availability and irrigation water saline conditions increases rooting potential and seedling survival in the field.

RESUMO Objetivou-se nesta pesquisa fazer a caracterização biométrica das sementes, morfologia das plântulas de Jacaranda mimosifolia D. Don. e avaliar o crescimento inicial das mudas em dois ambientes distintos com diferentes níveis de luminosidade. Para a biometria de sementes, utilizou-se 100 sementes sem as partes aladas para a mensuração do comprimento, largura e espessura. Para a morfologia das plântulas, semeou-se 100 sementes em tubetes de 300 cm3, registrando-se os eventos do processo germinativo através de fotos digitais e dispondo-as de forma sequenciada de acordo com a idade das plântulas. A análise de crescimento inicial foi realizada em sol pleno e estufa agrícola durante nove épocas num esquema de parcelas subdivididas, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. As variáveis respostas foram: número de folhas, altura da planta, diâmetro do coleto, comprimento da raiz, massa seca da parte aérea e raiz, bem como, o índice de qualidade de Dickson (IQD). O comprimento das sementes variou de 7,09 a 9,26 mm, a largura de 6,74 a 9,39 mm e a espessura de 1,11 a 1,89 mm. A germinação é do tipo fanerocotiledonar hipógea, com o surgimento da raiz primária ao sexto dia após a semeadura. O jacarandá-mimoso apresentou maiores valores de diâmetro do coleto, massa seca da raiz e IQD no transcorrer do tempo em sol pleno. Conclui-se que a caracterização biométrica de sementes e morfológica de plântulas de jacarandá-mimoso possibilita o reconhecimento da espécie em campo. As plantas produzidas em sol pleno apresentam melhor desenvolvimento. Após 36 semanas de desenvolvimento as mudas mantidas em sol pleno podem ser destinadas a recomposição vegetal e recuperação de áreas degradadas.

ABSTRACT This research aimed to characterize the biometry of seeds, the morphology of seedlings and to evaluate the initial growth of blue jacaranda trees (Jacaranda mimosifolia D. Don.) in two environments with distinct luminosity. The biometry of 100 de-winged seeds was measured by their length, width and thickness. One hundred seeds were sown into 300 cm3 tubes and seedlings morphology was registered throughout the germination process using digital photographs disposed sequentially according to seedlings age. The initial growth analysis was performed in two environments, full sun and greenhouse, during nine periods, and arranged in a complete randomized design with subplots. The response variables were: number of leaves, plant height, collar diameter, root length, aerial and roots dry weight, and Dickson’s Quality Index (DQI). Biometry results showed seeds 7.09 - 9.26 mm long, 6.74 -9.39 mm wide, and 1.11 -1.89 mm thick. Germination is of hypogealphanerocotylar type, with first root arising six days after sown. Plants at full sun presented larger collar diameters, greater root dry weight and higher DQI as evaluation periods passed by. In conclusion, the biometry of seeds and the morphology of seedlings of blue jacaranda can be used to recognize this species in the field. Plants at full sun presented better development. Seedlings cultivated at full sun can be destined to recuperate forests and degraded areas just 36 weeks after sowed.

RESUMO No presente trabalho buscou-se avaliar o grau de tolerância à salinidade e os mecanismos fisiológicos de mudas de seis espécies lenhosas nativas da caatinga, sob um gradiente de salinidade do solo, em casa de vegetação. Utilizou-se um delineamento em bloco ao acaso, em parcelas subdivididas, com cinco repetições, sendo as parcelas formadas pelas seis espécies e as subparcelas pelos níveis de salinidade do solo (1,2; 2,7; 4,7; 6,7; e 8,4 dS m-1). Os resultados demonstram que as espécies da Caatinga exibem uma elevada capacidade de adaptação em solos de salinidade baixa e moderada. Entretanto, considerando-se os graus de redução na produção de matéria seca total, no maior nível de salinidade, observou-se que apenas a espécie M. urundeuva mostrou-se tolerante à salinidade; H. impetiginosus e E. velutina se comportaram como moderadamente tolerantes. No presente estudo, também não foi possível estabelecer uma relação clara entre as trocas gasosas e o acúmulo de solutos orgânicos nas folhas com os graus de tolerância ao sal. Por outro lado, uma forte relação foi observada entre a razão Na+/K+ e o grau de tolerância das espécies em estudo, com as espécies mais tolerantes apresentando menos variação e valores mais baixos com o aumento da salinidade do solo. Estas espécies, contudo, mostraram uma baixa capacidade de retenção de Na+ nos caules, que pode ser um fator limitante na sua utilização em projetos de revegetação em áreas degradadas por salinização secundária.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the salt tolerance and physiological responses of six woody native species of the Caatinga ecosystem, on a soil salinity gradient in a greenhouse. The experimental design was of randomized blocks in a split-plot scheme; six plant species native of the Caatinga in the plots, and five levels of soil salinity in the sub-plots (1.2, 2.7, 4.7, 6.7 and 8.4 dS m-1), with five replications. The results demonstrate that species of the Caatinga ecosystem display a high capacity for adaptation in soils of low and moderate salinity. However, considering the reduction in total dry matter production at the highest salinity level, it was seen that only the species M. urundeuva was tolerant to salinity, and H. impetiginosus and E. velutina behaved as moderately tolerant. In the present study, it was also not possible to establish a clear relationship between the leaf gas exchange or the accumulation of organic solutes in the leaves with the degrees of salt tolerance. On the other hand, a strong relationship was seen between the Na+/K+ ratio and the degree of tolerance of the species under study, with the more tolerant species displaying less variation and lower values with the increases in soil salinity. These species, however, showed a low capacity for retaining Na+ in the stems, which may be a limiting factor on their use in revegetation projects of those areas degraded by secondary salinization.

RESUMO A propagação de Acnistus arborescens (fruto-do-sabiá) usualmente é feita através de estacas, devido a baixa taxa de germinação de suas sementes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar o efeito da temperatura e do estimulante nitrato de potássio (KNO3) na germinação do fruto-do-sabiá. O experimento foi realizado utilizando quatro regimes de temperatura (20, 25, 30 e 20-30 °C), com e sem nitrato de potássio, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições de 50 sementes cada. Foram avaliados a porcentagem, o índice de velocidade e o tempo médio de germinação. Nas temperaturas constantes, o KNO3 favoreceu a germinação, sendo as maiores porcentagens (>68%) obtidas nas temperaturas de 20 °C e 25 °C. A temperatura alternada de 20-30 °C aumentou a porcentagem de germinação, sem a adição de KNO3, portanto além da propagação vegetativa. A produção de mudas a partir de sementes é viável.

ABSTRACT The propagation of Acnistus arborescens (fruto-do-sabiá) is usually made using cuttings, because the germination percentage of this species is low. The objective of this work was to study the effect of temperature and potassium nitrate (KNO3) stimulant on the germination of fruto-do-sabiá. The experiment was conducted under four temperature regimes (20, 25, 30 and 20-30 °C), with and without potassium nitrate, in a completely randomized design with four replications of 50 seeds each. The percentage, speed index, and average time of germination were evaluated. Under constant temperatures, KNO3 improved germination, with the highest percentages (>68%) obtained at the temperatures of 20 and 25 °C. The alternating temperature of 20-30 °C was effective in overcoming seed dormancy without addition of KNO3; therefore, besides the vegetative propagation, the production of seedlings from seeds is viable.

Objetivou-se nessa pesquisa avaliar a influência da maturação dos frutos na qualidade fisiológica das sementes e crescimento inicial de Copernicia hospita. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em um fatorial 2 x 3 x 2 com quatro repetições, os fatores foram constituídos por duas colorações de frutos (verde-amarelados e escuros), três tipos de propágulos (fruto íntegro, fruto despolpado e semente), e embebição (sem e com) por cinco dias, dispostos em um delineamento inteiramente casualisado. As variáveis de observação foram: porcentagem, velocidade e tempo médio de emergência, altura da planta, diâmetro do coleto, massa seca da parte aérea e do sistema radicular. Frutos de coloração escura, independentemente do tipo de propágulo, e frutos verdes amarelados despolpados, com ou sem embebição, mostram-se superiores com uma maior porcentagem de emergência, índice de velocidade e menor tempo médio de emergência. A embebição dos propágulos proporciona incrementos na massa seca da parte aérea, das raízes e no diâmetro do coleto.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the influence of fruit maturation on the physiological quality of seeds and on initial growth of Copernicia hospita. Treatments were arranged into a 2 x 3 x 2 factorial, with four replications. The factors were made up of two fruit colourings (yellow-green and dark), three types of propagules (whole fruits, pulped fruits and seeds), and with and without soaking for five days and arranged in a completely randomized design. The observation variables were: percentage, speed and average emergence time; plant height; stem diameter; dry mass of the aerial part and root system. Dark colored fruits, regardless of the propagule type, and pulped yellow-green fruit, with or without soaking, are superior, having a higher percentage for emergence and speed index, and a lower average emergence time. Soaking the propagules increases the stem diameter and dry mass of the aerial part and the roots.

Objetivou-se analisar o efeito da maturação dos frutos na qualidade fisiológica das sementes e no crescimento inicial de Copernicia prunifera. Os propágulos foram coletados de exemplares da arborização urbana de Fortaleza, CE, Brasil. Os tratamentos foram arranjados com quatro repetições em um fatorial 2x3+1; os fatores foram constituídos por duas colorações de frutos (verde-amarelados e escuros), três tipos de propágulos (fruto íntegro, fruto despolpado e semente) e uma testemunha adicional (semente pré-germinada extraída de frutos de coloração escura) dispostos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. As variáveis avalidas foram: porcentagem de emergência, altura da planta, diâmetro do coleto, massa seca da parte aérea e do sistema radicular, e o índice de qualidade de Dickson. Os frutos verde-amarelados podem ser usados na propagação da carnaúba desde que se proceda à retirada da polpa e da película que envolve a semente. As plantas provenientes dos frutos escuros apresentam maiores valores de altura, diâmetro do coleto, massa seca da parte aérea e das raízes. Pelo índice de qualidade de Dickson plantas provenientes de frutos de coloração escura possuem melhor padrão de qualidade do que as dos frutos verde amarelados.

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of fruit maturation on the physiological quality of seeds and on the initial growth of carnauba palm (Copernicia prunifera). Propagules were collected from specimens of urban tree growth in Fortaleza, CE, Brazil. The treatments were set up with four replications in a 2x3+1 factorial arrangement; the factors consisted of two color tones of fruit (yellowish-green and dark colored fruit), three types of propagules (whole fruit, pulped fruit and seeds) and an additional control (pre-germinated seed extracted from dark colored fruits) in a completely randomized design. The variables assessed were: percentage of emergence, plant height, stem diameter, dry weight of the shoots and of the root system, and the Dickson quality index. The yellowish-green fruits may be used in carnauba palm propagation if the pulp and the pellicle around the seed are removed. Plants derived from dark colored fruits exhibit greater values for height, stem diameter, dry weight of the above ground part and of the roots. From the Dickson quality index, plants derived from dark colored fruits have a better standard of quality than those from yellowish-green fruits.

Para avaliar a influência da luz e da temperatura na germinação de sementes de Cochlospermum vitifolium, frutos maduros foram coletados de 12 plantas matrizes. Os tratamentos foram mantidos em câmaras de germinação equipadas com lâmpadas fluorescentes brancas, num arranjo fatorial 2 × 4, constituídos por duas condições de luminosidade, com fotoperíodo de 8 h de luz e 16 h de escuro, e escuro completo, distribuídos em quatro regimes de temperatura, sendo três temperaturas constantes (20, 25 e 30 ºC) e uma temperatura alternada (20-30ºC), utilizando-se um modelo inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições de 50 sementes. Efetuaram-se contagens diárias até o 14.º dia após a semeadura, para avaliação da porcentagem de germinação, do índice de velocidade e do tempo médio de germinação. Conclui-se que as sementes de Cochlospermum vitifolium são fotoblásticas neutras e a temperatura constante de 20 ºC é a condição mais adequada para a germinação da espécie.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the influence of light and temperature on the germination of Cochlospermum vitifolium seeds. To this end, ripe fruits were picked from twelve mother plants and the treatments were kept in a germination chamber equipped with white fluorescent lamps in a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement consisting of two light conditions, with a photoperiod of 8 h of light and 16 h of darkness and total darkness, divided in four temperature regimes: three constant temperatures (20, 25 and 30 ºC) and an alternating temperature (20-30 ºC), using a completely randomized design with four replications of 50 seeds. Daily counts were performed until the 14th day after planting to evaluate the percentage of germination, speed rate, and average time of germination. We concluded that the seeds of Cochlospermum vitifolium are neutral photoblastic and the constant temperature of 20 ºC is the best condition for the germination of this species.

Em geral, espécies arbóreas que ocorrem na vegetação de Caatinga, no semiárido do Nordeste brasileiro, têm suas fenofases (floração, frutificação e mudança foliar) condicionadas pela duração e intensidade da seca sazonal. Este estudo registrou a fenologia da queda foliar, incisão, floração e frutificação em 32 indivíduos de Dalbergia cearensis. Os indivíduos foram amostrados a cada 15 dias em 2009-10 e 2010-11, na Unidade de Conservação de Uso Sustentável "Fazenda Não me Deixes", situada em Quixadá, Ceará, Semiárido brasileiro. A frequência de ocorrência das fenofases foi relacionada com os elementos do clima (precipitação pluviométrica média mensal, temperatura média mensal, insolação média mensal e disponibilidade hídrica no solo). A fenologia vegetativa, queda e brotamento de novas folhas, acompanhou a sazonalidade da precipitação pluviométrica durante as estações seca e chuvosa. A floração e frutificação ocorreram no início das chuvas, e os diásporos de D. cearensis são dispersos o ano inteiro, após se desprenderem lentamente das panículas axilares compactas.

In general, tree species that occur in the Caatinga vegetation in the Brazilian semiarid of the northeastern region, have their phenophases (flowering, fruiting and foliage change) conditioned by the duration and intensity of seasonal drought. This study records the phenology of leaf-fall, leaf incision, flowering and fruit production of 32 Dalbergia cearensis Ducke individuals. Samples were collected every 15 days from 2009 to 2011 at the Unidade de Conservação de Uso Sustentável Fazenda Não me Deixes, a conservation area in the Brazilian semiarid. The frequency of occurrence of the phenophases was related to the elements of climate (average monthly rainfall, monthly average temperature, monthly average insolation and soil water availability). The vegetative phenology, leaf fall and sprouting of new leaves, followed the seasonality of rainfall during the dry and rainy seasons. The flowering and fruiting occurred at the beginning of the rains, and the diaspores of D. cearensis were scattered throughout the year after they broke off slowly from the compact axillary panicles.

Objetivou-se avaliar a germinação, morfologia de frutos, sementes e descrição de estádios de crescimento de plantas de mandacaru. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, num arranjo fatorial 2 x 3, constituídos pelas combinações de duas condições de luminosidade e três regimes de temperatura. Contagens diárias do número de sementes germinadas foram realizadas até o 16° dia da semeadura para a determinação da porcentagem, índice de velocidade e tempo médio de germinação. Para a descrição morfológica das sementes consideraram-se aspectos externos e internos. O processo germinativo e o desenvolvimento das plantas durante 150 dias foram avaliados sendo caracterizados oito estádios de crescimento, baseados na diferenciação morfológica. O fruto apresenta 154,66 ± 40,01 g de massa, comprimento de 82,26 ± 5,78 mm, diâmetro de 62,63 ± 6,63 mm e 1439 ± 189,78 sementes. A temperatura de 25 ºC sob fotoperíodo de 12 horas proporciona a maior taxa de germinação e as sementes comportam-se como fotoblásticas neutras. A germinação é epígea e fanerocotiledonar. O crescimento é lento e após 150 dias da semeadura a planta encontra-se com epicótilo com presença de grande quantidade de espinhos, onde a planta inteira apresenta 325,30 mm de comprimento.

This work aimed to evaluate the germination and morphology of fruits, seeds and description of plant growth stages of mandacaru. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement, consisting of combinations of two light conditions and three temperature regimes. A daily count of the number of germinated seeds was performed until the 16th day after sowing in order to determine the percentage, speed and time of germination. External and internal aspects were considered for the morphological description. The germination and the development of plants were evaluated for 150 days and featured eight stages of growth, based on morphological differentiation. The fruit has 154,66 ± 40,01 g mass, 82,26 ± 5,78 mm length, 62,63 ± 6,63 mm diameter and 1439 ± 189,78 seeds. The temperature of 25 °C under a photoperiod of 12 h provides the highest rate of seed germination and the seeds behave as neutral photoblastic. The germination is epigeal and fanerocotyledonary. The growth is slow and after 150 days of sowing the plant presents epicotyl with a large amount of thorns, where the whole plant is 325.30 mm in length.

O N é o nutriente de maior importância para a produtividade do arroz (Oryza sativa L.). Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a resposta de cultivares de arroz de terras altas em função de diferentes doses e épocas de adubação nitrogenada. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados com parcelas subsubdivididas, com quatro repetições. Foram estudadas cinco cultivares de arroz (BRS MG Curinga, BRS Monarca, BRS Pepita, BRS Primavera e BRS Sertaneja), três épocas de aplicação de N (100 % na semeadura; 50 % na semeadura e 50 % no perfilhamento; e 100 % no perfilhamento) e quatro doses de N (0, 50, 100 e 150 kg ha-1). As cultivares avaliadas responderam ao incremento de doses e à época de aplicação de N, destacando-se BRS Primavera e BRS Sertaneja como as mais produtivas quando as doses de N foram distribuídas 50 % na semeadura e 50 % no perfilhamento, enquanto a cultivar BRS Monarca apresentou a melhor resposta à adubação nitrogenada quando todo o N foi aplicado no perfilhamento.

Nitrogen is the most important nutrient for rice (Oryza sativa L) yields. This study aimed to evaluate the response of upland rice cultivars to N rate and application times in a randomized block design, in subdivided plots with four replications. The studied factors were five rice cultivars (BRS MG Curinga, BRS Monarca, BRS Pepita, BRS Primavera, and BRS Sertaneja), three application times (100 % at planting, 50 % at planting - 50 % at tillering and 100 % at tillering) and four N rates (0, 50, 100, and 150 kg ha-1). All cultivars responded to increased rates and different times of N application, especially BRS Primavera and BRS Sertaneja, which were the most productive when 50 % N rates were applied at sowing and 50 % at tillering. The response of cultivar BRS Monarca to N fertilization was best when 100 % of the fertilizer was applied at tillering.

Objetivou-se avaliar a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de xique-xique (Pilosocereus gounellei) armazenadas em diferentes ambientes e embalagens durante o período de seis meses. Utilizou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições, num esquema de parcelas subdivididas. As parcelas receberam a combinação de dois ambientes de armazenamento, câmara fria e ambiente natural, e três embalagens, saco de papel multifoliado, saco de plástico e vidro. As subparcelas constaram dos períodos de armazenamento 0, 2, 4 e 6 meses. Após cada período de armazenamento, avaliou-se o teor de água, a porcentagem, o índice de velocidade e tempo médio de germinação. A câmara fria é mais adequada ao armazenamento de sementes de xique-xique quando comparada ao ambiente natural. Neste ambiente, todas as embalagens testadas foram eficientes em manter a qualidade fisiológica. Em ambiente natural, as sementes acondicionadas em saco de plástico apresentaram a maior germinação (87%), porém o saco de papel multifoliado mostrou-se mais estável em todas as variáveis analisadas, com germinação de 58%, velocidade de 3,9 e tempo médio de germinação de 7,9 dias ao final de seis meses de armazenamento. Em ambiente natural, o saco de papel multifoliado, é a condição ideal para a conservação da viabilidade de sementes de xique-xique.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of Pilosocereus gounellei seeds stored in different environments and types of packaging for six months. The experimental design was completely randomized, in split plots with four replications. The plots received two storage environments, cold chamber and natural environment, and three types of package, multi-layer paper bag, plastic bag and glass. The subplots received the storage periods 0, 2, 4 and 6 months. After each storage period, the seed moisture content, percentage of germination, germination speed index and mean time of germination were evaluated. The cold chamber was more suitable to store xique-xique seeds compared to the natural environment. In that environment, all the packages were effective to keep the physiological quality. In the natural environment, the seeds packed in plastic bags showed the highest percentage of germination (87%), but the multi-layer paper bag was more stable for all variables, with 58% of germination, speed index of germination equals to 3.9 and mean time of germination of 7.9 days after six months of storage. In the natural environment, multi-layer paper bags showed the best results to the conservation of xique-xique seed viability.

The present work examined the germination and morphology of the fruits and seeds of the cactus Pilosocereus gounellei (xique-xique) and describeb the different stages of seedling growth. Germination tests examined the effects of combinations of two illumination regimes (a 12 hour photoperiod and total darkness) and three temperature regimes (25, 30, and 20-30 ºC) on the seeds of this species. Germination counts were made daily until the 16th day after sowing and the germination percentage and velocity index, and average germination time were evaluated. Descriptions of seed morphology considered both their external and internal aspects. The processes of germination and seedling growth were evaluated during 150 days and eight developmental stages were identified based on morphological changes. The fruits of the xique-xique cactus are 40.67 ± 4.40 mm long and 48.09 ± 3.23 mm in diameter, weigh 53.85 ± 10.03 g, and contain 3713 ± 689.50 seeds. Alternating temperatures of 20-30 ºC together with a photoperiod of 12 hours of light resulted in the highest seed germination rate. The seeds are positively photoblastic and germination is epigeal and fanerocotyledonary. Seedling growth is slow, but at 150 days after sowing the plants had developed epicotyls, large numbers of thorns, and the whole plant averaged 59.56 mm in height.

Mesmo tendo-se avançando nas técnicas de produção de mudas, ainda existem muitos problemas a serem solucionados, principalmente no que se refere ao desenvolvimento do sistema radicular das mudas, em função das características dos recipientes utilizados. O objetivo do trabalho foi determinar o efeito do tamanho do recipiente e do tempo de cultivo da planta na produção de mudas de Copernicia hospita Martius. Sementes extraídas de frutos em estádio visual de maturação foram pré-germinadas e semeadas em sacos plásticos de 20 x 30, 28 x 40 e 40 x 60 cm, contendo como substrato a mistura de arisco + areia vermelha + esterco bovino curtido (2:1:1). Após a semeadura, os recipientes foram mantidos por três, seis ou nove meses em pleno sol. Nenhum dos recipientes analisados, durante seus respectivos períodos de cultivo, influenciou as variáveis de crescimento utilizadas na avaliação das respostas da planta. O tamanho dos recipientes não influenciou na formação das mudas de C. hospita; contudo, em função da economia e praticidade, recomenda-se a utilização do recipiente com dimensões de 20 x 30 cm. O tempo de cultivo, de nove meses, forma mudas mais vigorosas

Even though advances have been made in the techniques of seedling production, there are still many problems to be solved, especially with regard to the development of the root system of seedlings, depending on the containers used. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of recipient size and the plant cultivation time in the production of C. hospita seedlings. Seeds of carnauba (Copernicia hospita Martius) obtained from mature fruit, were pre-germinated and sown in plastic 20 x 30, 28 x 40 and 40 x 60 cm bags, within a substrate of sandy loam + red sand + cured cow manure (2:1:1). After sowing, the bags were kept for 3, 6 or 9 months at a place with direct sunlight. The variables of growth of the plants were not influenced either by the size of the recipients or by the periods of exposure. Although the size of the bags did not influence the development of the plants, the 20 x 30 cm size should be more practical and economical to be used. The 9 months growth period gave more vigorous plants

Objetivou-se apresentar resultados sobre a morfologia de frutos, sementes, bem como a germinação e a descrição de estádios de crescimento das plântulas de Pilosocereus pachycladus. As sementes utilizadas foram obtidas de frutos colhidos na Fazenda Experimental Vale do Curu, em Pentecoste - CE. Foram utilizados 10 frutos para realização das determinações biométricas e morfológicas. Para a descrição da morfologia das sementes consideraram-se os aspectos externos e internos. Foram testadas duas condições de luminosidade (fotoperíodo de 12 horas e escuro completo) e três temperaturas (25; 30 e 20-30 ºC) dispostas num arranjo fatorial 2 x 3, no modelo inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições de 50 sementes cada. Efetuaram-se contagens diárias até o 16º dia após a semeadura para avaliar: porcentagem e índice de velocidade de germinação. Para a descrição e ilustração da morfologia externa da plântula, foi realizada a semeadura de 200 sementes em bandeja de polietileno. Avaliaram-se os processos de germinação e crescimento das plântulas de facheiro durante um período de 150 dias, sendo caracterizados oito estádios de desenvolvimento, que foram baseados nas diferenças morfológicas observadas. Conclui-se que o fruto apresenta comprimento de 38,13 mm, espessura de 50,53 mm e 3786 sementes. As sementes de facheiro comportam-se como fotoblástica positivas e as temperaturas constantes de 25 e 30 ºC proporcionaram as maiores porcentagens e velocidades de germinação. Após 150 dias da semeadura a planta encontra-se com epicótilo em crescimento, com presença de grande quantidade de espinhos, e com 94,31 mm de comprimento.

It was aimed to present the results on the germination, morphology of fruits, seeds and description of stages of plant growth of Pilosocereus pachycladus. The seeds were obtained from fruits harvested at the Curu Valley Experimental Farm, in Pentecoste - CE. Ten fruits were used to the realization of the biometric and morphological determinations. For description of the morphology of the seeds, were considered the external and internal aspects. Two light conditions (12 hours photoperiod and total darkness) and three temperatures (25; 30 and 20-30 ºC) were tested in a factorial arrangement 2 x 3 arranged in a completely randomized design with four replications of 50 seeds each. Counts were done daily until the 16th day after sowing and to evaluated: the percentage and velocity index of germination. For description of the morphology of the seeds, were considered the external and internal aspects. For description and illustration of the external morphology of germination and seedling, were sowed 200 seeds in a polyethylene tray. The processes of germination and seedling growth were evaluated during 150 days and eight stages of development were characterized and those were based on morphological differences observed. It was concluded that, the fruit measures 38.13 mm of length, 50.53 mm of thickness and 3786 seeds. The constant temperatures of 25 ºC and 30 ºC under a photoperiod of 12 hours made possible the highest percentages and velocities of germination and the seeds behave as photoblastic positive. 150 days after sowing, the epicotyl is growing with a large amount of thorns and 94.31 mm of length.
